What is the sealed connector?

Whenever we need to protect a connector from its operating environment, we need to consider one of two types of sealed connectors. The two types of sealed connectors available include hermetically sealed connectors and environmentally sealed connectors. Konnra connector engineers will introduce sealed connectors for you.

The contacts of hermetically sealed connectors are sealed to prevent air and gas, while environmentally sealed connectors have IP or protection grade seals. Hermetically sealed connectors usually use glass, ceramic or epoxy to form a compression seal. They are designed to withstand high voltages and are therefore often used in military and aerospace design or deep-sea applications. Environmentally sealed connectors prevent harmful contaminants such as water, dust, and dirt. They are designed to maintain the electrical performance of the contacts, which are commonly used in mobile machinery, ships and road vehicles.

The environmental seal on the connector uses an interface seal to prevent contaminants from entering the intersection between the connection areas. In low-temperature applications that require repeated fits and unfits, these O-ring seals are usually made of some type of rubber, with fluoropolymers and ethylene-propylene rubber being the most common.

Before making a connector selection, you should first understand the requirements of the program. For example, the IP rating is determined by its dust and dust resistance (this is the first number, 1 to 6) and the ability of the connector to withstand liquid immersion at a specific time and depth (second number 1 to 8). Just like IP67 compared with IP68 means that they can withstand dust intrusion after 8 times, but IP67 can only be immersed in 1 meter for 30 minutes, while IP68 exceeds 1 meter in 30 minutes. For IP68, connector manufacturers must indicate how deep the connector is submerged in water.
